How to choose a SIM-only deal
Last updated: 22 October 2026
A SIM-only plan gives you calls, texts and data without a new phone. If you already own a phone you're happy with, it's usually the cheapest way to stay connected.
1. Work out how much data you use
Check your phone's settings for last month's mobile data use, then add a little headroom.
- Under 5GB: messaging, email, maps and light browsing, mostly on Wi‑Fi.
- 10–50GB: regular social media, music streaming and some video.
- 100GB or unlimited: lots of video, hotspotting a laptop, or no home broadband.
2. Pick a contract length
30-day rolling plans let you leave at any time. 12 or 24-month plans are often cheaper each month but tie you in.
3. Check for price rises
Since January 2025, Ofcom rules mean providers must show any mid-contract price rises in pounds and pence when you sign up. Look for the rise amount on the provider's page.
4. Think about where you use your phone
Check the provider's coverage map at home and at work. If you travel, look at EU roaming charges, as some plans include it and others charge per day.
5. Keep your number when you switch
Text PAC to 65075 to get a code that keeps your number, or STAC to 75075 if you want a new number. Give the code to your new provider and they handle the switch, usually within one working day.
