How to choose a broadband deal

Last updated: 22 October 2026

The best broadband deal depends on what's available at your address, how many people are online at once, and how long you're happy to commit.

1. Choose a speed

  • Up to about 70Mb: one or two people browsing and streaming in HD.
  • 150–500Mb: a busy household with several people streaming, gaming or working from home.
  • 900Mb and above: big downloads, 4K streaming on lots of screens, or home businesses.

Upload speed matters too if you make video calls or back up files to the cloud.

2. Full fibre or 5G?

Full fibre runs a cable all the way to your home and is the most reliable. 5G home broadband uses the mobile network, needs no engineer and can suit renters, but speed depends on your local signal.

3. Check your address

Prices and speeds vary by address. Enter your postcode on the provider's site to see what you can actually get.

4. Look at the full cost

Add any setup or router fees to the monthly price over the full contract. Check the mid-contract price rise, which must be shown in pounds and pence.

5. Switching is easy

Under Ofcom's One Touch Switch process, you usually just contact your new provider and they arrange the move and the end of your old contract. Check whether you'd pay an early exit fee first.
