How to choose car insurance

Last updated: 22 October 2026

Car insurance prices depend on you, your car and where you live, so every quote is personal. Knowing what's covered helps you compare quotes properly, not just on price.

1. Choose a level of cover

  • Third party only: the legal minimum. Covers damage or injury you cause to others.
  • Third party, fire and theft: adds cover if your car is stolen or catches fire.
  • Comprehensive: also covers damage to your own car. It isn't always the most expensive, so get a quote for it too.

2. Understand the excess

The excess is what you pay towards a claim. It's made up of a compulsory part set by the insurer and an optional voluntary part. Only choose a higher voluntary excess you could afford to pay.

3. Protect your no-claims discount

Each year without a claim usually earns a discount. Some insurers let you pay extra to protect it. Check the policy wording, as your price can still rise after a claim.

4. Decide which extras you need

Breakdown cover, a courtesy car, legal expenses and windscreen cover may be included or cost extra. Avoid paying twice for cover you already have.

5. Renewal prices

FCA rules mean insurers can't charge you more to renew than they'd charge a new customer through the same channel. It's still worth comparing at renewal, as other insurers may be cheaper.

6. Be accurate

Give correct details about drivers, mileage, parking and modifications. Wrong information can make a claim fail.
