Mobile Roaming: A Checklist Before Travelling Abroad
Last updated: 22 October 2026
Roaming charges vary by network, destination and plan. Check your own contract before travelling rather than assuming a UK allowance works abroad.
Check every destination on your trip
Look up the provider’s destination list, including stopovers. European roaming is not automatically free on every UK plan. Check daily charges, data allowances, calls and texts, and whether any pass renews automatically.
Read fair-use limits and arrival messages
An unlimited UK allowance may have a separate overseas data limit. Ofcom says providers must publish roaming charges and send an automatic message about charges or usage limits when you enter another country, unless you have opted out. Read it before turning on mobile data.
Set spending controls before departure
Ask your network about a roaming spending cap and how it works. Turn off background updates and data roaming if you want to avoid mobile data use. Download maps while connected to Wi-Fi. Ships, aircraft and border areas can connect to networks outside your expected roaming zone.
Compare a travel eSIM carefully
Check whether your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Compare coverage countries, validity, activation timing and data allowance. Some travel plans are data-only, so normal calls and texts may still use your UK SIM. Keep your UK number available if you need verification messages, but check incoming call charges.
Frequently asked questions
Does unlimited data include unlimited roaming?
Not necessarily. Overseas fair-use allowances and destination charges can be different from the UK allowance.
Can I rely on airport Wi-Fi instead?
Wi-Fi can reduce mobile data use, but availability and security vary. Keep essential travel details available offline.
