Check Mobile Coverage Before Switching Networks
Last updated: 22 October 2026
A cheap SIM-only deal is only useful if you can get a reliable signal where you need it. Compare coverage before committing to a new network.
Check your real locations, not just a UK coverage percentage
Use Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile checker for your home, workplace and places you visit regularly. Compare indoor and outdoor predictions, and check the networks behind smaller SIM brands as well as the brand name.
A coverage map is a prediction, not a promise. Walls, terrain, congestion and your handset can change your experience. A network that works well for a neighbour may perform differently inside your home.
Try the network before a long contract
If reception is uncertain, consider testing a short rolling plan before taking a longer commitment. Check its cancellation notice, payment terms and any activation charge first. Ask people nearby about their experience, but use that alongside the map rather than instead of it.
Check phone features too
Confirm that your handset supports the network’s services, including 5G and Wi-Fi calling if these matter to you. Wi-Fi calling can help indoors where mobile reception is weak, but depends on compatible equipment and a working internet connection.
Your switching checklist
Write down the places that matter, compare predicted coverage, check handset compatibility and roaming, then compare data allowance and full contract cost. Do not choose on headline monthly price alone.
Frequently asked questions
Is a coverage map a guarantee?
No. It estimates coverage; buildings, the local landscape and busy networks can affect the signal you actually receive.
Will a smaller SIM brand have the same coverage?
It may use a larger network’s infrastructure, but features and service terms can differ. Check the underlying network and the plan details.
