Car Insurance Renewal: Compare Quotes Like for Like
Last updated: 22 October 2026
A lower premium is not always a better policy. Use your renewal notice as a starting point, then compare the cover and costs you actually need.
Review the details before asking for quotes
Check your address, occupation, mileage, vehicle use, modifications and named drivers. Use accurate information consistently across every quote. Tell the insurer about changes rather than reusing old details just to get a lower price.
Compare excesses and exclusions
Add together compulsory and voluntary excesses so you know what you would contribute to a claim. Compare courtesy-car conditions, windscreen cover, personal belongings, legal expenses and breakdown assistance. Read exclusions and limits; similarly named policies may not offer identical protection.
Look at the total payment cost
Compare the annual total with the full cost of monthly instalments, including any interest and fees. Check cancellation charges and whether optional extras have been added. A smaller monthly payment can still mean a higher yearly cost. CompareDirect does not arrange insurance or credit.
Handle renewal without a gap in cover
Check the new policy start date, the old policy end date and whether auto-renewal is enabled. Confirm any cancellation with the insurer and keep the confirmation. If the vehicle needs insurance, do not let cover lapse while deciding. Renewal prices can change, so check quote expiry dates.
Frequently asked questions
Is comprehensive insurance always the most expensive?
No. Insurers price risk differently. Compare the cover levels you need rather than assuming the order of prices.
Does protecting a no-claims discount protect my premium?
Not necessarily. Protection applies to the discount under the policy terms; the overall premium can still rise after a claim.
