Best broadband in my area: how to check
Last updated: 22 October 2026
The best broadband deal in the country is no use if it doesn't reach your street. Availability — not price — decides your real shortlist, and it changes from one postcode to the next.
1. Start with your postcode
Every provider's website has an availability checker. Enter your postcode and it shows the speeds and packages you can actually get at your address. Check two or three providers, because they use different networks.
2. Know the network types
- Full fibre (FTTP): a fibre cable all the way to your home. Fastest and most reliable, but not everywhere yet.
- Part fibre (FTTC): fibre to the street cabinet, then copper to your home. Widely available, usually up to around 70Mb.
- Cable: Virgin Media's separate network — fast, but only where it's been built.
- 5G home broadband: uses the mobile network. No engineer needed, but speed depends on your local signal.
3. Match speed to your household
One or two people browsing and streaming in HD need only up to about 70Mb. A busy household with several people streaming, gaming and working from home should look at 150–500Mb. Only heavy users need 900Mb or more.
4. Compare the full cost
Once you know what's available, compare monthly price, setup fees, contract length and the mid-contract price rise, which providers must now show in pounds and pence.
5. Switching
Under Ofcom's One Touch Switch process, your new provider usually arranges the whole move, including ending your old contract. Check for early exit fees first if you're still in contract.
Before you buy
Our listings are dated snapshots of providers' own pages, not live prices. Always check the price, contract length and terms on the provider's website. Nothing here is financial or insurance advice.
