Last updated: 22 October 2026

A broadband social tariff may offer eligible households a lower-cost connection. Eligibility, speeds and availability depend on the provider and your address.

Check who qualifies

Ofcom lists broadband social tariffs for people receiving certain benefits. Universal Credit is commonly covered, but providers may accept other benefits and can have different eligibility checks. Read the individual offer rather than assuming every claimant qualifies.

Compare the connection, not just the price

Check the speed available at your address, setup charges, router costs, payment method and whether a landline is included if you need one. A lower-cost tariff still needs to support the household’s work, study and essential services.

Ask your current provider first

Ofcom says switching to your existing provider’s social tariff is free. Ask how eligibility will be checked and whether other services in a bundle are affected. If changing providers, confirm the transfer arrangements and any outstanding charges before ordering.

Check flexibility and eligibility reviews

Ofcom says there is no early-exit fee for leaving a social tariff. Ask whether eligibility is reviewed and what happens if your circumstances change. Social tariffs are separate from ordinary advertised deals, so use Ofcom’s provider list alongside the standard comparison listings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply without receiving benefits?

These tariffs usually require qualifying benefits. Check the provider’s criteria; standard lower-cost packages may be available if you do not qualify.

Are social tariffs available everywhere?

No. Provider coverage and eligibility vary, so you must check your address and circumstances directly.
