How to compare a weekly shop fairly
- Write down the 15–20 items you buy most weeks and price the same list at both shops.
- Compare unit prices (per kg, litre or item), not pack prices: pack sizes often differ.
- Price items with and without app offers, because app offers aren’t open to everyone.
- Repeat over two or three weeks, since weekly offers and Specialbuys come and go.
Own-brand products and pack sizes
Most of what both shops sell is own-label, with a smaller choice of branded goods. That keeps the range simple but means a like-for-like swap isn’t always available. Check the ingredients, allergens and weight rather than the look of the pack. Our unit-price calculator helps when pack sizes differ.
Lidl Plus and the Aldi app
Lidl Plus
Rewards app: coupons, offers and points
A free rewards app (18+, mobile number and email needed) with personal coupons, weekly app offers, Lidl Plus points, digital receipts and partner offers. Scan the app at the till.
Aldi app
Shopping app (no points scheme confirmed)
A free app for weekly offers, Specialbuys alerts, a shopping list, a stock checker and a barcode scanner. Aldi’s app page does not describe a points or member-price scheme.
The key difference: Lidl Plus is a rewards app with personal coupons and points, while Aldi’s app is a shopping tool for offers, lists and stock checks. Aldi’s official app page doesn’t describe a points or member-price scheme.
Offers and shopping experience
Both run weekly offers and a rotating middle aisle of non-food items (Aldi calls them Specialbuys). Lidl Plus adds app-only offers on top. Stores are typically smaller than big-four supermarkets, so you may need another shop for specialist items.
Availability and delivery
- Aldi: Trial delivery through Deliveroo from a handful of participating stores only (Aldi lists Ashford, Dover, Ipswich, Letchworth, Margate, Norwich, Strood and Tamworth). Most areas are not covered. Aldi on Deliveroo (opens in a new tab)
- Lidl: We couldn’t confirm a home grocery delivery service on Lidl’s official pages. Check with the retailer.
Who might prefer each
- Lidl may suit shoppers happy to use an app for coupons, points and digital receipts.
- Aldi may suit shoppers who prefer no account at all and just want weekly offers and a shopping list.
- Closeness matters: a slightly cheaper basket can cost more once you add travel.
We don’t declare an overall winner, because no current, clearly explained price comparison supports one.
Frequently asked questions
Is Aldi or Lidl cheaper?
It depends on what you buy and on weekly offers. Price your own list at both and compare unit prices.
Does Aldi have a loyalty card?
Aldi’s official app page describes offers, a shopping list and a stock checker, not a points scheme.
Do I need Lidl Plus to shop at Lidl?
No. Lidl Plus is optional; it adds coupons, app offers and points if you register (18+).
Does Aldi deliver?
Only through a Deliveroo trial at a handful of participating stores listed on Aldi’s website.
