A record 403,000 UK drivers a day shopped for car insurance in the first half of 2026, yet only about 22% switched. Here is what is pushing prices and how to check you are getting good value at renewal.

British drivers are shopping around for car insurance in record numbers, according to new research released this week.

A report from LexisNexis Risk Solutions, published on 2 November, found that an average of 403,000 consumers a day shopped for motor insurance during the first half of 2026. That is around 31,000 more people per day than in the same period last year.

Yet despite all that shopping around, only about 22% of policyholders switched insurer. In other words, roughly 78% stayed with their existing provider.

Why are drivers checking more quotes?

Cost is clearly an important consideration. The Association of British Insurers reported that the average motor premium paid in the second quarter of 2026 was £566, up 1% on the previous quarter.

Insurers also faced substantial claims costs, paying out a record £3.2 billion in motor claims during that quarter. Repair bills, replacement parts, vehicle technology and claims costs can all influence the price motorists are quoted.

But insurance is personal. Two drivers with similar cars may receive very different premiums depending on their location, driving history, annual mileage and other risk factors.

Should you stay with your current insurer?

There is nothing wrong with remaining loyal to an insurer that offers good value and reliable service. The important thing is to make an informed decision.

Before your renewal date, compare the total price and level of protection offered elsewhere. Check the compulsory and voluntary excess, exclusions, optional extras and whether benefits such as breakdown assistance or a courtesy car are included.

A cheaper policy is not necessarily better if it leaves you with less protection when you need it.

Practical ways to look for savings

1. Start comparing quotes ahead of your renewal date rather than leaving everything until the last moment.

2. Check whether your estimated annual mileage is still accurate.

3. Consider whether paying annually is cheaper overall than paying monthly.

4. Review optional extras and remove any you genuinely do not need.

5. Make sure all the information you give insurers is accurate.

CompareDirect tip: do not let your car insurance renew automatically without checking whether the same level of cover is available at a more competitive price.
