Fuel cost calculator

Work out what a journey costs in petrol or diesel, and what your driving costs over a year. Add the distance, your car's miles per gallon and the price at the pump.

Add your trip, your car's mpg and the pump price.

£14.14 for this journey

That's 10.1 litres, or 14.14p a mile.

Over a year of 7,000 miles: about £990.04, or £82.50 a month.

Uses the UK gallon (4.546 litres). The figures here are examples: use the price at your local pump and the mpg from your car's trip computer, which is usually lower than the official figure.

Where to find your figures

Your car's real mpg is usually on the trip computer. The official figure in the brochure is often higher than what you get on real roads, especially on short journeys and in cold weather. The pump price is shown on the forecourt sign in pence per litre.

Ways to use less fuel

  • Keep tyres at the pressure in your handbook — soft tyres increase fuel use.
  • Drive smoothly, change up early and keep to the speed limit.
  • Take off roof boxes and racks when you're not using them.
  • Combine short trips; a cold engine uses more fuel.

Supermarket forecourts are often cheaper than motorway services. Prices change often, so check before you fill up.

The starting figures are examples, not prices we've checked or quotes. Replace them with figures from your own policy, quote or receipts. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
