How to reduce your car insurance costs

Last updated: 22 October 2026

Car insurance premiums are calculated from your age, car, postcode, usage and claims history, so there is no single cheapest insurer. What you can control is how you buy: the excess, the cover, the payment method and the timing. Here is what actually moves the price.

Changes that usually cut the premium

Raise your voluntary excess to a level you could genuinely pay in a claim, pay annually rather than monthly where the interest saving is real, and add an experienced named driver if one genuinely drives the car regularly.

Reduce the mileage you declare honestly, keep the car garaged or on a driveway overnight, and look at telematics (black box) policies if you are a careful driver — these can be much cheaper for low-mileage drivers.

Timing and renewal

Quotes are often cheapest around three to four weeks before the cover starts, so do not leave renewal to the last day. Since 2022, FCA rules mean your insurer cannot charge you more at renewal than a new customer would pay through the same channel — so if the renewal quote is high, you are entitled to shop around and come back.

Get several quotes rather than accepting the first. Our list links to insurers' own sites; each prices your details differently, which is why two identical drivers can be quoted very different amounts.

What not to do

Never 'front' a policy by naming an experienced driver as the main driver when someone else uses the car most — that is fraud and can invalidate your cover. Do not understate modifications, parking or mileage either; a false answer can void a claim.

CompareDirect is not authorised by the FCA and does not sell or arrange insurance. We list each insurer's published policy features and link you to their own site for a personal quote.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my car insurance so expensive?

Premiums reflect the insurer's expected cost of claims for drivers and cars like yours. Young or new drivers, high-performance cars, high-mileage use and urban postcodes all push the price up.

Does a higher excess really lower my premium?

Usually, yes, because you are taking a larger share of any claim. Only raise it as far as you could comfortably pay in full if you claimed.

Is paying monthly more expensive?

Often, because many insurers charge interest on instalments. Check the total payable over the year before choosing monthly.

When is the cheapest time to buy car insurance?

Around three to four weeks before the policy starts is commonly cheaper than buying on the day, because last-minute quotes skew towards urgent buyers.

Can my insurer charge more at renewal?

Under FCA renewal rules it cannot charge you more than a new customer would pay for the same product through the same channel. Get a quote elsewhere and use it.

Does building no claims discount help?

Yes — each claim-free year normally reduces the premium. Protecting the discount costs extra, so check whether the protection fee is worth it for your claim history.
