Check my household bills

  1. Step 1: Your home (optional)
  2. Step 2: Your bills
  3. Step 3: Alternatives
  4. Step 4: Your results

1. Your home (optional)

A little context helps you sense-check your bills. It is never used to invent estimates or decide what you're eligible for, and it stays in this browser.

2. Your current bills

Use your bank statement or latest bills. Leave anything you don't pay empty, and switch off any bill you don't want to include.

How the household bills checker works

  1. Tell us a little about your home if you'd like to — it's optional and only ever context for you, never a way for us to guess your spending.
  2. Enter what you currently pay for each bill, and how often you pay it. Weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly payments are all converted to a yearly figure so they can be compared fairly.
  3. For any bill where you've found a cheaper price, add it as an alternative — including any setup fee, exit charge or cashback, so the first-year figure is honest.
  4. Your results update as you type: your monthly and yearly totals, the difference each alternative would make, and a ranked view of where your money goes.

What bills should I include?

Anything you pay regularly: electricity, gas, broadband, mobile phones, car and home insurance, water, Council Tax, TV and streaming subscriptions, and anything else that leaves your account every month. Paying for more than one phone or car? Add each one separately. You can also add your own named bills, such as a gym membership or pet insurance.

How to calculate annual household expenses

The checker converts every payment to a yearly amount: weekly bills are multiplied by 52, monthly bills by 12, quarterly bills by 4. Your monthly average is simply the yearly total divided by 12. These are annualised estimates — a useful way to compare bills that arrive at different times, not a prediction of any single month.

How CompareDirect calculates results

Savings are worked out only from prices you enter. An alternative's first-year cost includes one-off switching or setup charges and early exit fees, and takes off any cashback or bill credit. Promotional prices are never stretched beyond their stated period: if a deal is cheaper for six months and you don't know the price afterwards, we say so rather than guess. If an alternative would cost you more, we show it as an additional cost, never as a saving. Bills without an alternative stay at their current cost in the combined comparison.

Ways to review household bills

Start with bills whose contract has ended — broadband and mobile providers must tell you when your minimum term is up and show their best deals. For energy, compare tariffs using your own usage in kWh rather than the headline price cap. For insurance, compare like-for-like cover, excesses and exclusions, and check whether paying annually is cheaper than monthly. And cancel subscriptions you no longer use.

Common questions about household savings

Is the checker really free?

Yes. There's no registration, no email address and nothing to pay.

Is my information private?

Your bill amounts are used to calculate your results in this browser. They are not sent to CompareDirect or saved to your account. Nothing you type appears in web addresses or tracking events.

Are the savings guaranteed?

No. A saving only appears when you enter a cheaper alternative yourself, and that alternative is not a verified market price. Always check the final price, contract length and any exit fee with the provider before you switch.

Can I keep a copy of my results?

Yes — download a PDF report, print it, or copy a plain-text summary using the buttons in your results. The report is created in your browser.
