Compare mobile phone deals in the UK

Last updated: 22 October 2026

A new phone on contract spreads the cost of the handset over the months. We show the upfront cost, monthly price and data together, so you can compare the real total cost of each phone deal.

Look at the total cost, not the monthly price

Multiply the monthly price by the number of months and add the upfront cost. That total is the fairest way to compare two phone contracts — a low monthly price can hide a big upfront fee.

Compare that total against buying the phone outright and pairing it with a SIM-only plan. It's often cheaper over two years.

Split contracts: handset and airtime

Many UK networks now split the contract into a device plan and an airtime plan. Once the handset is paid off, your bill should drop — and you can move the airtime to a cheaper SIM-only deal.

Picking the right phone

Think about storage, battery life and how long the maker promises software updates. A slightly older model with years of updates left can be much better value than the latest release.

What we can show you, and what we cannot

A phone contract is only comparable if the network publishes the handset price, the upfront fee and the airtime tariff together. Most UK networks hide those behind a postcode- and model-by-model quote flow, so we cannot honestly list a price for them.

We therefore publish two things: every priced contract we can verify from a network's own advertised terms, costed end to end in the table below; and the networks that quote individually, listed as destinations so you can get a quote on their site. Nothing is invented to fill a gap.

Cheaper ways to get a new phone

Buying the phone outright with trade-in credit, then pairing it with a cheap SIM-only plan, is frequently the lowest total cost over two years. Checker and refurbished models from a recognised retailer cost less again, usually with a warranty.

If you do take a contract, check the early-termination figure and any mid-contract rise shown in pounds and pence, and note when the device plan ends so your monthly cost actually drops.

Phone contracts we have costed end to end

Total over the agreement = upfront cost + handset instalments + airtime instalments, worked from the network's own advertised terms checked 22 October 2026. Handset and airtime are usually separate agreements.

Networks that quote phone deals individually

These networks do not publish a fixed price for every handset, so we list them as quote destinations rather than priced contracts (checked 22 October 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy a phone outright?

Often, yes. Buying outright plus a cheap SIM-only plan frequently costs less over 24 months than a phone contract. Always compare the total cost.

Do phone contracts need a credit check?

Yes, phone contracts usually include a credit check because the handset is paid for over time. CompareDirect is not a credit broker or lender.

Can I upgrade early?

Usually only by paying off the remaining device plan. Check your network's terms before you sign.

Are the phones unlocked?

Phones sold by UK networks are now sold unlocked, so you can use any network's SIM.

Which networks do you compare?

We list every handset offer we can verify from a network's own pages in our dated snapshot, plus the networks that quote individually. Open the phone contracts section to see the current list.

Why are there more Vodafone contracts than other networks?

Because Vodafone publishes handset, upfront and airtime figures on its product pages, so we can cost those agreements end to end. Other networks quote model by model, so we list them as quote destinations instead of inventing prices.

What does 'total over the agreement' include?

The upfront cost plus every handset instalment plus every airtime instalment across the whole term, worked from the network's advertised figures. It is not a personalised credit assessment.

Can I keep my number when I change network on a phone contract?

Yes. Text PAC to 65075 for a free switching code and give it to the new network; the move normally completes within one working day.
