Compare car insurance in the UK
Last updated: 22 October 2026
Car insurance prices depend on you, your car and where you live, so there's no single price to list. We help you compare insurers direct — cover, features and where to get a quote.
Types of car insurance cover
Comprehensive cover protects your own car as well as other people. Third party, fire and theft covers others plus fire or theft of your car. Third party only is the legal minimum. Comprehensive is sometimes the cheapest, so always compare all three.
How to lower your premium
Choosing a higher voluntary excess, building your no claims discount, paying annually rather than monthly, and adding an experienced named driver can all reduce the price. Never 'front' a policy by naming the wrong main driver — it's fraud.
Renewal pricing rules
Since 2022 FCA rules mean your insurer can't charge you more at renewal than it would charge a new customer through the same channel. It's still worth comparing every year.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't you show car insurance prices?
Premiums are calculated individually from your details, so any listed price would mislead. We link you to insurers to get a personal quote.
Does CompareDirect sell insurance?
No. CompareDirect is not authorised by the FCA and does not sell or arrange insurance. We link to insurers' own websites.
What is a compulsory excess?
The amount you must pay towards any claim, set by the insurer. Any voluntary excess you choose is added on top.
Is monthly car insurance more expensive?
Often, because many insurers charge interest on monthly instalments. Paying annually is usually cheaper.
When should I buy my car insurance?
Quotes are often cheaper around three to four weeks before your renewal or start date.
