No-claims discount explainer and estimator

Your no-claims discount rewards each year you drive without making a claim. See what it saves you now and how much more you could pay after one claim, using the figures from your own insurer.

Use the figures from your renewal letter or your insurer's discount scale.

Your discount saves £540.00

You pay £360.00 instead of £900.00.

After one claim you'd drop to 3 years and pay about £495.00 — £135.00 more a year.

Every insurer sets its own discount scale and step-back rules, and the premium itself may also change after a claim. Protecting your no-claims discount keeps the years but doesn't stop the premium rising.

How no-claims discount works

Each full year you're insured without a claim usually adds a year to your no-claims discount, up to a maximum your insurer sets. The discount is a percentage off your premium, and it tends to grow fastest in the first few years. Insurers don't all use the same scale, so five years with one insurer may not give the same percentage as five years with another.

What happens after a claim

If you claim and the insurer can't recover its costs from someone else, you normally lose some of your years — often two for one claim — rather than all of them. A claim that wasn't your fault may not affect your discount once the costs are recovered, but this can take time.

Protecting your no-claims discount

Protection lets you make a set number of claims without losing years. It doesn't stop your premium going up after a claim, because the insurer can still charge more for the risk. Ask for proof of your no-claims years when you switch insurer — your new insurer will ask for it.

The starting figures are examples, not prices we've checked or quotes. Replace them with figures from your own policy, quote or receipts. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
