iPhone 18 Pro Max Review: Smarter, Heavier and Built for Video

Apple's biggest 2026 iPhone looks almost identical to last year's, but underneath sits a new A20 Pro chip, a far more capable Siri, a variable-aperture camera and faster charging. Here's what that means in everyday use, and who it might suit. We don't recommend any phone — this review is here to help you decide.

The short version

If you put the iPhone 18 Pro Max next to last year's 17 Pro Max, you'd struggle to tell them apart. The changes are on the inside: Siri finally behaves like a modern AI assistant, the main camera gains a variable aperture, video recording takes another step forward and charging is much quicker. The catch is weight — at 249g it's noticeably heavier — and a starting price £100 higher than the 17 Pro Max launched at.

What stands out

  • Siri AI is genuinely useful for everyday tasks
  • Variable aperture and class-leading video
  • Longer battery life and 60W charging
  • Superb 6.9-inch screen

What to weigh up

  • Heavy at 249g — tiring for long one-handed use
  • Design and screen barely changed from the 17 Pro Max
  • Expensive, especially at 1TB and 2TB
  • How much you gain depends on whether you use AI features

Design: familiar shape, extra weight

Apple has kept last year's aluminium body and full-width camera plateau, with exactly the same height, width and thickness. New colour finishes, including Burgundy and Glacier, are the main visual clue that this is the newer model.

What you will notice is the weight. The 18 Pro Max is 249g, up from 233g, and reviewers including Mobiles.co.uk found it tiring to hold for long periods. The likely reason is a bigger vapour chamber to keep the A20 Pro cool — so you're swapping some comfort for sustained speed. If you mostly use your phone one-handed, try it in a shop first.

Display: unchanged, and still excellent

The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR screen carries over: bright enough at up to 3,000 nits to read in direct sun, smooth at 120Hz, and with an always-on mode. There's nothing new to report here, but it remains one of the best screens on any phone — ideal for films, maps and reading.

Performance and Siri AI: the real upgrade

This is where the 18 Pro Max feels like a different phone. The A20 Pro chip powers a rebuilt Siri that can draft email replies, pull together conversations from different apps and handle multi-step requests — areas where earlier iPhones trailed Android rivals. Reviewers describe it as the most capable Pro Max yet for assistant-style tasks.

Whether that matters depends on you. If you rarely talk to your phone or don't want AI summarising your messages, the gain over a 17 Pro Max is much smaller. If you already lean on AI tools, it's the strongest reason to upgrade.

Cameras: variable aperture and pro-level video

The three 48MP rear cameras look the same on paper, but the main lens now has a variable aperture. In plain terms, the phone can let in more or less light and control background blur, choosing the setting automatically if you don't want to think about it. Portraits and close-ups benefit most.

Video is the headline. Cinematic Mode now records 4K Dolby Vision at 60 frames per second (up from 30), subject tracking keeps moving people sharper, and low-light footage is cleaner. Mobiles.co.uk called it the best video phone they had used. There's also a new Apple Reference Image option that creates a verifiable record of a photo, so it can be checked later for edits — niche, but useful for journalists and photographers.

Battery and charging

Battery life rises to a reported 43 hours of video playback, against 37 hours on the 17 Pro Max, so most people should reach the end of a second day with lighter use. Charging is a bigger leap: with a 60W USB-C adapter (not included) it reportedly reaches about 50% in roughly 15 minutes, compared with a 40W maximum last year.

Storage and price

Apple's UK store lists the iPhone 18 Pro Max from £1,299 for 256GB, with the 1TB model at £1,899 and a 2TB option above that. Most people will be fine with 256GB, particularly with iCloud. Contract and refurbished prices vary a lot, so it pays to compare.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs 17 Pro Max

  • Same: size, screen, overall design, three 48MP cameras, storage options.
  • Better: A20 Pro chip and Siri AI, variable aperture, 60fps Cinematic 4K, battery life, 60W charging.
  • Worse: 16g heavier, and a higher starting price.

Who might it suit?

  • Video makers and keen photographers who'll use the new aperture and Cinematic features.
  • AI-curious users who want the most capable Siri yet.
  • Owners of an iPhone 15 Pro Max or older, for whom the jump is large.

It may suit you less if you want something light, or if you own a 17 Pro Max and rarely use AI features. You can browse alternatives on our Popular Phones page, save with a refurbished phone, or pair your current handset with a SIM only deal.

Verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a software and camera upgrade wearing last year's clothes. Its screen, speed, battery and video are about as good as phones get in 2026; its weight and price are the compromises. Decide how much Siri AI and pro video matter to you, then compare the deals you can actually get.
