No upfront cost phone deals

Mobile phone deals with no upfront cost

A 'no upfront cost' phone deal means you pay nothing on day one, because the handset is spread across higher monthly payments instead. Below we explain what to check before you take one, and list the contracts in our snapshot with the smallest upfront fee — which today starts at £20, not £0.

Phone contracts with the lowest upfront cost

Upfront cost is what you pay on day one. Our 27 October 2026 snapshot holds no contract with a £0 upfront fee, so this ranks the smallest fees we can verify. Total over the agreement = upfront + handset instalments + airtime instalments.

What 'no upfront cost' actually means

Nothing is free. A deal with no upfront cost simply moves the handset price into the monthly payments, usually over a longer device plan — 36, 48 or even 60 months. The total you pay is often higher than a deal where you put money down.

Work both totals before you choose: upfront fee plus (handset instalment × months) plus (airtime × months). A £0-down contract over 48 months regularly costs more across the term than the same phone with £30 down over 24.

Why we cannot list a £0-down contract today

In our 27 October 2026 snapshot every contract we have costed carries an upfront fee, the lowest being £20. Networks do run zero-upfront promotions, but they apply to specific handsets, change weekly and are usually only visible once you pick a model on their own site.

So we will not quote a £0-down price we have not verified on the network's own page. The table above shows the smallest upfront fees we can stand behind, with the full term cost beside each one.

Where zero-upfront offers do appear

They turn up most often on new lines and number-switch offers, on loyalty or rewards deals for existing customers, and when trade-in credit is applied against the deposit — the most reliable way to bring a day-one payment close to nothing.

If a zero-upfront offer matters to you, open the network's own page for the exact model and storage you want and check the device plan length, any mid-contract rise, and whether the offer is tied to a promotion that ends.

The cheaper alternative to paying nothing down

Buying outright and adding a cheap SIM only plan is frequently the lowest total over two or three years, and a refurbished model from a recognised retailer costs less again, usually with a warranty.

If you keep your current phone and only change the airtime, a SIM only plan costing a few pounds a month beats any handset contract. Our cheap SIM page lists the lowest we hold.

Frequently asked questions

Are no upfront cost phone deals free?

No. The handset is paid for through the monthly instalments, usually over a longer term, so the total across the agreement can be higher than a deal with a deposit. Always compare totals.

Does CompareDirect hold any £0 upfront phone contracts?

Not in our current snapshot: every contract we have costed has an upfront fee, the lowest being £20 (checked 27 October 2026). Networks do run zero-upfront promotions, so check the network's own page for the model you want.

Is it better to pay upfront or monthly?

Paying something upfront normally lowers the total you pay, because less of the handset is spread across the term. Work out both totals: upfront fee plus every monthly instalment.

Can trade-in reduce the upfront cost?

Yes. Trade-in credit is usually applied against the deposit or the device plan, which is the most reliable way to get close to £0 down. Value your old phone separately from the contract price.

Do no-upfront deals need a credit check?

Usually yes, because the handset is financed over the term. CompareDirect is not a credit broker or lender and does not run credit checks; the network does its own.

What is the cheapest way to get a new phone?

Buy outright — new with trade-in, or refurbished from a recognised retailer — and pair it with a cheap SIM only plan. That combination is usually the lowest total over two years.
