British Gas contact number and energy deals

British Gas is the UK's largest household energy supplier. Most people land here looking for a phone number, so we start with British Gas's published contact numbers, then explain its current tariffs and how they compare with the Ofgem price cap. How to contact British Gas

Gas and electricity enquiries: call 0333 202 9885, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (published on British Gas's own help pages). 0333 numbers cost the same as a call to a normal landline and are usually included in mobile and landline minutes.

Home services (boiler cover, repairs and HomeCare): payments 0333 202 9729 and services enquiries 0333 200 8899, both Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Many everyday tasks — meter readings, moving home, topping up a prepayment meter — are quicker online through your British Gas account or the British Gas contact page.

If you smell gas, call the free National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away, at any time. It covers every home in Great Britain, whoever supplies your gas.

British Gas tariffs (checked 1 November 2026)

Fixed energy tariff — your unit rates and standing charges stay the same for the length of the plan. Fix and Fall — a two-year fix where prices are reviewed against the Ofgem price cap after 12 months and drop if prices have fallen. Tracker — prices follow the price cap, with British Gas saying you pay up to £50 less. Standard Variable — prices move with the price cap and can go up or down.

Smart tariffs include EV Power (half-price electricity from 12am to 5am for electric car owners), a heat pump tariff, Charge Power for home batteries, Hive Solar Saver, the Smart Export Guarantee for solar panels, and PeakSave, which gives existing customers half-price electricity on Sundays from 9am to 5pm. Prepayment and smart prepayment tariffs are also available.

British Gas doesn't publish one national price for these tariffs — rates depend on your region and meter — so get a quote with your postcode on its website, and compare it with our regional energy table.

How British Gas compares with the price cap

From 1 October 2026 the Ofgem price cap is £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel household (up from £1,663). British Gas's own forecast suggests it could rise sharply again on 1 January 2027, though it describes that prediction as low-confidence. The government has also removed VAT from electricity bills until July 2027.

If prices are expected to rise, a fixed tariff protects you; if they fall, a variable or tracker tariff gets cheaper. Always compare the unit rate and the standing charge together, and check any exit fee before fixing.
