The short answer

Get quotes about three to four weeks before renewal using identical details, buy the new policy to start the day the old one ends, then turn off auto-renewal with your current insurer. Switching mid-term is possible, but your old insurer may charge a cancellation fee and keep part of the premium.

Step 1: Find your renewal date and current cover

Your renewal invitation must arrive at least 21 days before the policy ends. It shows this year's price alongside last year's. Note the end date, the cover level, the excesses, named drivers and any extras such as breakdown or legal cover.

  • Check whether the policy is set to renew automatically.
  • Note your years of no-claims bonus and whether it is protected.

Step 2: Get quotes using identical details

Compare like for like: the same drivers, car, annual mileage, overnight parking, use and voluntary excess. Use comparison sites and also check insurers that sell direct, as some brands do not appear on comparison sites. Our provider profiles link straight to each insurer's own quote page.

  • Answer every question accurately – wrong details can invalidate a claim.
  • Check how long each quote is valid; many last up to about 30 days, but this varies.

Step 3: Ask your current insurer too

Since January 2022, FCA rules mean your insurer cannot charge you more at renewal than it would charge a new customer for the same cover through the same sales channel. Your renewal price can still rise, and other insurers may be cheaper, so treat it as one quote among several.

  • Ask what is included in the renewal price.
  • Do not rely on a discount offered only after you say you are leaving.

Step 4: Buy the new policy with no gap

Set the new policy to start on the day your old one ends. Driving without insurance is illegal, and a car kept on a public road must stay insured unless it is declared off the road with a SORN. Check the start date and time on the new documents.

  • Have your licence, car registration and no-claims proof ready.
  • Read the policy information document before paying.

Step 5: Stop the old policy renewing

Tell your current insurer you do not want to renew, and ask for written confirmation. If you pay monthly by direct debit or continuous payment authority, check that no further payment will be taken. Your new insurer does not cancel the old policy for you.

  • Keep the confirmation email or letter.
  • Request proof of your no-claims bonus if the new insurer needs it.

Switching in the middle of a policy

You can leave at any time, but after the 14-day cooling-off period the old insurer may charge a cancellation fee and keep a proportion of the premium. If you have made a claim, you may not get any refund. Work out the total cost before deciding a cheaper new quote is worth it.

  • Ask for a written cancellation settlement first.
  • Monthly payers may owe the remaining balance of a credit agreement.

Before you decide

  • New policy starts the day the old one ends.
  • Auto-renewal turned off and confirmed in writing.
  • No-claims proof saved and payment stopped on the old policy.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to switch car insurance?

Usually at renewal, which avoids cancellation fees. Many people start comparing three to four weeks before the renewal date, but prices depend on each insurer.

Will I lose my no-claims bonus if I switch?

No. Your no-claims bonus belongs to you and moves with you. Your old insurer can provide proof, usually from your renewal invitation or on request.

Does my new insurer cancel my old policy?

No. You must tell your current insurer you are not renewing, or cancel the policy yourself if switching mid-term.

Can I switch car insurance if I pay monthly?

Yes. At renewal, stop the old agreement from rolling over. Mid-term, ask whether any balance is still owed under the credit agreement.

Is it cheaper to stay with my current insurer?

Not necessarily. Renewal prices cannot exceed the new-customer price from the same insurer and channel, but other insurers may quote less. Comparing is the only way to know.
