The short answer

A named driver is someone specifically covered to drive under the policy. The main driver must reflect the car’s actual use. Naming a different main driver to obtain a cheaper quote can be fronting.

Who should be the main driver?

Tell the insurer who uses the car most and describe the situation accurately. Ownership, registration and being the most experienced driver are not the same as being the main driver.

  • Explain shared use if it is unclear.
  • Do not list a parent as main driver when the young person is the real main user.

Adding a named driver

Provide accurate licence, occupation, claims and conviction information. The insurer decides whether to accept them and how the addition affects your price.

  • Check permission before they drive.
  • Adding an experienced driver does not guarantee a saving.

Restrictions still apply

Named drivers must follow the permitted use, licence requirements and policy restrictions. They may have different excesses from the policyholder.

  • Check commuting and business use.
  • Review young-driver and telematics terms.

Removing or changing a driver

Tell the insurer when regular driving arrangements change. Mid-policy changes can affect the premium and trigger a fee.

  • Keep the revised schedule or confirmation.
  • Check the updated start date before the new driver uses the car.

Before you decide

  • Identify the actual main driver.
  • Give each driver’s details accurately.
  • Check the certificate and schedule after adding someone.

Frequently asked questions

Can a named driver build no-claims bonus?

Some insurers recognise named-driver experience, but it is not automatically transferable bonus.

Can someone drive before I add them?

Only if they already have suitable cover for that car and use. Do not assume their own policy provides it.
