Which broadband does not need a phone line?

Full fibre (fibre to the premises) brings service over fibre and does not need a copper voice line, and wireless products such as 5G home broadband need no engineer visit at all. Many newer part-fibre products also no longer bundle a landline.

What you still need is a working address on the relevant network. Availability differs street by street, so the cheapest package in our table may not be the one that reaches your home.

Landline calls are moving to digital voice

As the UK's old analogue phone network closes, voice service is moving onto digital products — either bundled with broadband or as a standalone digital voice service. If you rely on a landline for a pendant alarm or lift emergency, ask your provider about continuity before you cancel anything.

If you want to keep a number, ask specifically whether it transfers with the move. Ofcom's number-transfer rules should let you keep it, but the process differs between providers.

What to check on the order summary

Whether a phone line or voice service is included and what it costs, the minimum guaranteed speed as well as the average, the set-up fee, the contract length and any mid-contract price rise shown in pounds and pence.

With One Touch Switch your new provider arranges the whole move and cancels your old service, so you do not have to call them. Switching normally takes around two weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get broadband without a phone line?

Yes. Full fibre and wireless home broadband products do not need a traditional copper voice line, and many modern part-fibre products no longer bundle one either.

Is broadband without a landline cheaper?

Often slightly, because you are not paying for a voice line you do not use. The bigger saving usually comes from choosing a speed you actually need.

Will I lose my landline number?

Not necessarily. Ask your new provider to transfer the number when you order. Ofcom's rules are designed to let you keep it, though the process differs between providers.

Does wireless broadband need a line?

No. 5G and 4G home broadband connect to the mobile network, so no phone line or engineer visit is needed — but coverage at your address decides whether it works well.

How do I check what is available at my address?

Enter your postcode on the provider's own site. Our comparison is a dated snapshot of advertised prices, so availability and the final price are confirmed by the provider.
